Witch hazel mulch is a byproduct of witch hazel distillation. It is a clean, soft wood chip mulch that repels gnats and other pests.

Description

Witch Hazel Mulch from The Soil Makers is a clean, soft-wood mulch crafted from a byproduct of witch hazel distillation.
Sourced directly from the distillers, this mulch comes as lightweight wood chips that are easy to spread and work into organic soil programs without mess. This mulch is more than just soil cover. It supports organic gardening practices by providing a natural barrier on the soil surface that helps repel gnats and other pests that tend to inhabit soil or potting mixes. The result is healthier root zones and fewer nuisance insects around your plants, whether you’re tending garden beds or container setups.

Key benefits - Byproduct of witch hazel distillation: a sustainable, lower-wuss alternative to traditional wood mulches.

Clean soft wood chips: low-dust texture that distributes evenly and breaks down gradually. - Pest-repellent surface: helps deter gnats and other soil-dwelling pests near your plants.

Soil-health ally: supports moisture retention, temperature moderation, and gradual nutrient release as it bio-decomposes. - Organic mulch for layered regimens: integrates smoothly with other organic soil amendments and compost.

Ideal uses and scenarios - Garden beds and borders in organic landscapes, where reducing pest pressure supports plant health. - Raised beds and perimeter plantings where a lightweight mulch layer helps conserve moisture. - Container gardens and potted plants to limit soil pests without introducing synthetic coatings. - Short-term mulch cover that can be incorporated into compost cycles as it breaks down.

How to use - Spread a 2–3 inch layer around plants, keeping a small gap around stems to avoid moisture buildup against trunks or crowns. - Reapply as the mulch settles or after heavy rain; it blends into the soil over time, enriching the mulch layer with organic matter. - Water after application to help the mulch settle and begin its soil-building work.
Why The Soil Makers - Trusted by home gardeners and small growers for soil-first solutions that perform in real-world layouts. - Consistently rated highly by customers, with an average rating of 4.8 from 6 reviews, reflecting satisfaction with texture, pest-repellent properties, and overall performance.

Product features

Witch hazel, or hamamelis virginiana, is a shrub that resembles a cross between a gray birch and mountain laurel and grows in profusion in northern forests. Native Americans called the plant "winterbloom" because of the distinctive yellow flowers produced in the late fall. They exploited the plant's astringent qualities by boiling the branches and bark in water to make a catch-all remedy for bruises and insect bites. These uses were passed on to the early New England settlers, who probably adopted the name witch hazel from the old English word "wych," meaning flexible, or because the distinctive yellow blooms colored the woods around Halloween.

This Mulch is unlike any other on the market today and we are the exclusive supplier.
