Hypoaspis miles; also known as Stratiolaelaps scimitus, for natural control of Fungus Gnats and most other small, soil-inhabiting insects, Mites, and Springtails.

Description

Fungus Gnat Predator by The Soil Makers is a natural, biological solution to curb fungus gnats and other small soil-dwellers in homes, greenhouses, and garden beds. This beneficial mite, Hypoaspis miles (also known as Stratiolaelaps scimitus), also provides up to 30% control of Western Flower Thrips. Eggs hatch in about 2–3 days, and the full life cycle completes in roughly 11 days at 68°F. Temperature isn’t critical for activity, but they’re inactive below 57°F. They thrive under most conditions, provided soils aren’t constantly flooded or kept in extreme drought. This rapid, soil-based predator helps establish a protective presence where fungus gnats and similar pests breed. What you get and how it helps: - Targets and suppression: Fungus gnats and other small, soil-inhabiting insects, plus mites and springtails; modest suppression of Western Flower Thrips. - Fast action: Quick breeding and short life cycle mean predators begin reducing larval populations soon after release. - Broad compatibility: Effective across a range of growing environments, from home collections to greenhouses and capillary-mat systems. How to use (simple, effective application): - Application area: Sprinkle Fungus Gnat Predators across soil surfaces, capillary mats, hydroponic media, and other wet, exposed soil areas. Cover greenhouse floors and any moist zones where gnats congregate. - Coverage guidance: When pest populations are low, 5,000 Predators can treat up to 200 square feet of growing surface. For heavier infestations, larger releases are needed; typically one release can suffice for a growing season. - Timing: For bedding plants, release early to allow predators to spread to neighboring plants. - Seasonal tip: In fall, pests seek warm hiding spots; check undersides of leaves in late fall and mid-winter to disrupt over-wintering sites. Why The Soil Makers: a brand grounded in soil-first science, delivering practical, field-tested biology to help you grow healthier plants with fewer chemical interventions. This product sits in Home & Garden > Household Supplies > Pest Control > Pesticides, offering a straightforward, effective biological approach for pest management.Fungus Gnat Predators (Hypoaspis miles; also known as Stratiolaelaps scimitus) for natural control of Fungus Gnats and most other small, soil-inhabiting insects, Mites, and Springtails. Provides up to 30% control of Western Flower Thrips as well. Eggs hatch in about 2-3 days, and their life cycle is completed in about 11 days at 68 F. Temperature isn't critical, but they're inactive below 57 F. They thrive under almost any conditions except flooding or drought.

Application: Sprinkle Fungus Gnat Predators throughout the growing area onto soil surfaces, capillary mats, hydroponic media, etc. Be sure to treat all wet, exposed areas of soil and greenhouse floors. For bedding plants, it's probably not essential to treat every single flat, but do apply Predators early enough to allow time for them to spread to other plants. If Fungus Gnat populations are low, 5,000 Predators treats up to 200 square feet of growing surface. Larger pest populations will require larger releases, with one release usually being enough per growing season.

Handy Hint: In the Fall, pests look for warm hiding spots to "ride out" the Winter. And your plants are the perfect hiding place. So check the undersides of leaves late Fall and mid-Winter.
